Summary
Illuminated diploma for a doctorate in philosophy and medicine for Gershon Cantarini (written as Grassinus Cantarini in the manuscript, f. 2r-2v), member of a prominent Cohanim family, from the Università di Padova, dated 10 May 1703. Originally two bifolia folded to create four leaves, half of the inner bifolium, which contained the beginning of the diploma text (formerly f. 2r-2v), is now missing, leaving three leaves now foliated 1-3. Written and illuminated by Rocco Maria Castelli (written as Rocchus Maria Castelli in the manuscript, f. 2v). The diploma begins with an elaborate title page frame with a coat of arms above a wreath-enclosed blank area (f. 1v), and the leaf with the extant text of the diploma has a full floral border (f. 2r-2v). The text is written in humanistic cursive or italic script with initials in gold ink. Signed by Michelangelo Fardella, chair of astronomy and philosophy; Hermann Matthias von Westhoven (written as Hermannus Matthias Westhoven in the manuscript) of the medical faculty; and Alessandro Borromeo (written as Alexander Borromeus in the manuscript), another member of the faculty (f. 2v). Later inscriptions and signatures on a blank leaf at the end of the diploma (f. 3r) relate to Cantarini's license to practice medicine in Venice, issued by the Provveditori alla sanità on 7 July 1750.
