Summary

Letter to Theophilus Garencières, an apothecary in York, from Laurence Sterne describing the condition of his wife Elizabeth following a miscarriage and requesting an opiate for her, the only known evidence of the loss of the Sternes' second child. Dated Friday morning; probably written in May 1751 (Day). Written on a quarto bifolium, with a watermark of a crowned double circle with the motto Pro Patria Eiusque Libertate. Integral address leaf marked "To Mr. Garancieres." Spindle hole in center affecting two words, partially repaired. Minimal remnants of wax seal.
