Summary

Manuscript of essay by Hermann A. Schumacher, evidently in his own hand, concerning the Tule Indians (also called the San Blas, or Cuna Indians) in the Darien region (eastern Panama and northwestern Colombia), dated Bogotá, 28 December 1872; the essay was occasioned by a visit in Bogotá, shortly before, of three emissaries of those Indians, namely, three chiefs, Pali-Cuá of Cuti; Guavia of Mordi; and Matchi-Gologua of Narganá (f. 2v). Schumacher discusses the history, culture, current circumstances, and political situation of the Tule Indians, with a focus on information and opinions imparted by, and complaints brought forth by the emissaries, including their attitude vis-à-vis the ruling government of Colombia. The manuscript corresponds in great part to the article published under the title Indianer vom Panamá-Isthmus, signed only with the initials H. A. S., in the journal Zeitschrift für Ethnologie, Berlin, in 1873 (vol. 5, p. 311-317). The same title as in the published version appears in the manuscript as a caption title (f. 1r), in the hand of Schumacher, while the title on the cover (Die Tule Indianer des Staates Panama) is in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt. Aside from some differences in the arrangement of material in comparison to the published article, the manuscript contains a few passages that do no not appear in the published version, for example, two paragraphs concerning the historical account of Oviedo (f. 1r), and a paragraph in the conclusion (f. 7v); on the other hand, the list of place names given by the visitors (f. 8r) is less complete compared to the comparable list found in a footnote of the published article. In the manuscript Schumacher mentions that a photograph of the visitors is enclosed (f. 2v).
