Summary

This manuscript is a Gradual, and contains the music sung by the choir during Mass (fols. 1r-148r). It was made in Italy, perhaps Bologna, around 1425. In the sixteenth century, additional liturgical texts with musical decoration were appended to the end of the original text block. These include the offices for the Transfiguration (added in 1560 by "Hieronymi de Viglevano," fols. 148v-151r) and for Saint Hyacinth (added by "Michael Antonius de Pont," fols. 151v-153v). The original text is splendidly decorated with over fifty illuminated initials. Thirteen of these are historiated with images of the saints or events whose feasts they accompany, including Stephen (fol. 3r), Mary Magdalene (fol. 51v), and Dominic (fol. 53v). The manuscript may, in fact, have been made for Dominican use as it contains the offices of Saint Dominic and Saint Thomas Aquinas and commemorates the translations of both these saints. The folios of this book retain an early if not contemporary system of foliation in red ink, as well as four other foliations and paginations of later dates. An index of the offices contained within was added inside the front cover, perhaps in the eighteenth century.
