Summary

This manuscript is a carta executoria issued under the authority of Charles I of Spain in favor of Mari Lopez de Colmenares of the town of Carrión in northern Spain, wife of the late Pedro de Matienzo (spelled Matienco in the manuscript), in response to a pleito de hidalguia (litigation to establish noble status), probably on behalf of her son who was not yet of age, issued in Valladolid on 7 September 1552. The text is followed by signatures (fol. 28r) and a copy of a shorter document in humanistic cursive referring to Mari Lopez de Colmenares, Pedro de Matienzo, their son Garcia de Matienzo, and the carta executoria, dated 17 June 1553 and signed by a notary (fol. 28v). The volume concludes with full-page miniatures of Jesus with the Agnus Dei (fol. 29r), the Virgin Mary in prayer (fol. 29v), and a double portrait of a married couple (fol. 30r).

Red velvet, with coat-of-arms embroidered in heraldic colors on covers, silk edge and underlying velvet on edge of covers mostly worn away and damaged, not attached to manuscript; manuscript leaves tied with original multicolored cord typical of a carta executoria

Decoration

Three full-page miniatures, of Jesus with the Agnus Dei (fol. 29r), the Virgin Mary in prayer (fol. 29v), and a double portrait of a married couple (fol. 30r); large illuminated initial with family coat of arms matching those embroidered on the covers (fol. 1v); broad borders throughout in floral and other designs, including birds, insects, and elements of the family coat of arms (wolves, cauldrons, pennants, decapitated head (Moor's head?)), mostly on gold ground, possibly added later as they crudely avoid notarial marks at the bottom of each page and occasional initials on the top line extending into the upper margin; the borders without gold ground may be the earlier style of decoration (for example, fol. 14v, fols. 18v-19r); several section headings in square capitals in gold on purple ground
