Initial C with Confessor saints, including a bishop and a Dominican friar
This initial begins the Magnificat antiphon at first Vespers for the Common of One Confessor, 'Confessor domini [Nomine] astantem plebem corrobora sancta intercession ...' (Confessor of God, [name], strengthen the bystanding crowd with holy intercession ...' An artist active within the circle of Niccolò di Giacomo da Bologna (fl. ca. 1353- 1401), the most famous and prolific Bolognese illuminator working in the second half of the fourteenth century, illuminated these initials. Niccolò headed a large workshop that produced large numbers of choir books for churches and convents in and around Bologna.
