Tennent wrote this sermon to be delivered before the holy meal, in warning against sin. He begins by citing Romans 7:13, "Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful." He also cites Jeremiah 44:4, "Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate." From dates noted in the manuscript, it looks like Tennent wrote this sermon in 1745, then delivered it again in 1748.
