In Meshed, where Jews were forcibly converted to Islam in 1839 but continued to preserve their Jewish beliefs and practices secretly, two marriage contracts were prepared: one Islamic for public use, and the other Jewish, written privately at home ... were it not for the expression Jadid al-Islam (new Muslim) appearing in the former, one would not have been able to distinguish the it from other Meshed (Islamic) marriage contracts (S. Sabar p. 24 and also p. 327-328). Collation: Paper; fol. i + 4 + ii. Medium: Paper, watercolor, gold paint, ink. Decoration: The six inner pages of this booklet-form ketubbah are divided into elongated panels, each containing a line of Persian text. An ornamented panel at the top of the first page displays an Arabic inscriptionthat continues in the three panels below. Decoration: Wide floral borders, some with cartouches, decorate the upper and outer margins of each page. The cartouches of the final two pages contain signatures in Persian and Hebrew. The rich decoration is executed in gold, blue, red and green paint.
