Summary

This late fifteenth-century liturgical manuscript is a Book of Hours for the Use of Rome with a calendar for Flanders, Short Hours of the Holy Spirit and the Cross, a Mass of the Virgin, and the Hours of the Virgin. There are six full-page miniatures with blank versos, face pages with matching foliate borders, and illuminated opening initials.

• Two catalog entries pasted on the verso of the front flyleaf; a cutting from a newspaper with the headline "The highest-priced book" pasted on the recto of the first front endleaf

Gilbert, Saint Louis (his sale, Philadelphia, 7 June 1909); John Frederick Lewis, Philadelphia; given by his widow, Anne Baker Lewis, to the Free Library of Philadelphia in 1936; pasted on to recto of second end leaf, note written on letterhead of the Diocesan Chancery of Saint Louis, written in the hand of W.J. Gilbert: "Father van der Sanden [?] now at the Cathedral, says that the inscription on the next page is Flemish; it is written off below and a translation added by him; W.J.G. May 29/89"; a transcription and translation follow; on the verso of the second end leaf are notes about the manuscript that have been erased, "written on vellum" can still be discerned; on the recto of fol. 1, the inscription "Petrus Ysermans horst toe desen boeck" [This book belongs to Peter Ysermans]; illegible inscription at the top of fol. 1r "G. P[illegible] 12 [illegible]; on a blank page, after the calendar and before the Hours of the Holy Spirit, which begin on the verso, are the signatures of Petrus Ysermans and Jeronimus Maelens (fol. 14r)
