Summary
Interleaved manuscript translation in Otomi (?) language, by an unidentified author, bound into a printed copy of Juan de Gaona's Colloquios de la paz y tranquilidad christiana en lengua mexicana (con licencia, y priuilegio, en Mexico, e[n] casa d[e] Pedro Ocharte, 1582), as well as an interlinear Spanish translation in the printed book, possibly in the same hand. The interleaved manuscript, on paper similar to that of the printed pages, is composed and inserted in such a way that the translation and the printed Nahuatl text appear on facing pages throughout. The interleaved translation in the present copy is similar but not identical to the one found in a copy from the Icazbalceta collection, described in Roman Zulaica Garate's Los franciscanos y la imprenta en Mexico en el siglo XVI, p. 189 (with illustration p. 187), where the language is identified as Otomi. The printed book ends abruptly at f. 120, and is evidently missing one leaf at the end; the conclusion of the Nahuatl text is supplied in the interleaved manuscript (leaf numbered 121), along with the translation of it. The manuscript has two marginal notes, in brown ink, that mention names (Padre fray ... Juan de la Matta, mi amigo ... ; P. fray Diego Ponze) (opposite f. 24r and f. 53r, respectively). A back flyleaf is cut from a leaf showing printed text in Latin that contains the date 1719; the paper of the latter is different from (newer than?) that of the manuscript. Pasted onto the front flyleaf is a tracing of the book's title page, and the printed title page, which is currently loose and laid in, had previously been tipped in, affixed along the outer margin of the flyleaf and folded over, so that it covered the tracing. The flyleaf has a blind stamp that has been obscured by the tracing; the stamp is visible but not fully legible on the verso (containing the words: Presbitero ...Maria). The last leaf of the interleaved manuscript has a watermark, of which only a capital P is visible. Tipped in at back is a vocabulary list, of 31 entries, on two leaves of lined note paper, probably in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt; the list has Spanish on the left and Otomi (?) on the right, with notations of folio numbers in the current work.
