Summary
This is a manuscript of Rosh ha-Shanah prayers in the rite of the community of Carpentras, today a commune in the department of Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. It begins with piyutim for the eve of Rosh ha-Shanah, and following are the opening prayers for Shaḥarit, after moving to the Shaḥarit portion for the first day of Rosh ha-Shanah; Musaf follows, and it appears as though the scribe does not include the custom for Ḥazarat ha-shats (cantor's repetition of the silent ʹAmidah prayer), when special prayers and customs are often recited; in this manuscript, Musaf is just written followed by the instructions to "go home in peace" ("ṿe-Toḳʹin kan ke-yom rishon ṿe-yomar Musaf ... ṿe-holkhim le-betam le-shalom"; f. 90v). Finally, prayers for the eve (likely recited after midnight) of Tsom Gedaliyah, which falls on the day after Rosh ha-Shanah, follows the Shaḥarit of the second day. The manuscript runs through the prayers without making mention of the specific rites and differences within the Carpentras liturgical custom; of interest are the pizmonim, or recitationals, possibly for the time of the initial blowing of the shofar, although mentioned only for the second day (f. 88v-90r). The volume ends with penitential prayers for the eve of Rosh ha-Shanah, commonly referred to as Seliḥot (f. 92r-122v).
