Summary

Two letters written by Ellin Evans to her son Cadwalader Evans, later a physician at Pennsylvania Hospital and member of the American Philosophical Society. The first, dated 19 June 1751, is addressed to him in St. Anne, Jamaica, where he ended up instead of Edinburgh after his ship was captured by a Spanish privateer and taken to Haiti, from where he was released to Jamaica to recover from a fever. The second is addressed to him in the care of John Hunt, Merchant, in London, dated 26 July 1754, during his travels after a year of medical study in Edinburgh. Both letters offer maternal advice and news of family members and friends. Both were folded and sealed for sending and are fragile and partially torn where previously folded.
