Summary

An oblong volume comprising receipts of payment by Elizabeth Gaskill made to various people and merchants in Philadelphia spanning the years from 1804 to 1811. The handwritten receipts are signed by the vendor or person. Recorded in the volume are some payments to Jewish merchants in Philadelphia such as Israel Goldsmith. Many payments are signed by Esther Gaskill, who may have worked for merchant John McCallister. Other payees include auctioneer Frederick Montmollin, Joseph A. Lippincott, Passmore and Freeman, Humes and Etting, Moses Wills, and James and Ruth Wood. Many of the receipts recorded only the amount of payment. Other receipts indicate payments for fabric, hoisery, household goods, and rent. The receipts in the volume are written parallel to the spine in the manner of a note pad. One receipt is sewn in the volume. There are ten leaves laid in. Written on inside front cover: Elizabeth Gaskill's receipt book, 1804.
