Summary

An oblong, leather-bound volume containing receipts of payment made by flour merchant company Shirk & Geissinger to various people and companies in Philadelphia spanning the years from 1832 to 1837. The handwritten receipts are signed by the vendor or person. Recorded in the volume are some payments to Jewish merchants and businesses. Payments were made chiefly to wholesale grain merchants including Bunker & Starr, Isaac Lloyd & Sons, Joseph Few Smith & Co., Maxwell & James, Orrick & Noble, and Ridgway & Livesey. Payments were made for flour and superfine flour, hops, rent, salt, and tar. One receipt is pasted on the inside back cover is for a subscription to the Pennsylvania Inquirer and morning journal dated 1834. The Emrey family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was a later owner of the volume. On the last 34 pages of the volume are notations for services for horses and livestock spanning the years from 1876 to 1881. Written on the front cover are the initials G.L.E., 1883. Written on the back cover: J.C.E., 187[7], F.C. Emery, 1889, and 1883. The receipts in the volume are written parallel to the spine in the manner of a note pad.
