Summary
Photograph album with inscription inside front cover, "Presentet [sic] by a friend, New Orleans, July 14th, to Mrs. Mary Myers, M. Levy, 1865." The frame for the first photograph in the album is inscribed, "Yours truly, M. Levy." Of the 16 cartes-de-visite inserted into the album, nine are from New Orleans photographers (two from J. H. Scoggins, five from Theo. Lilienthal, one from Bernhard Moses, one from S. Moses & Son); one is from photographer E. C. Lewis of Bryan, Texas; and three are from photographers in the former Prussian province of Posen, now in modern Poland (one from H. Pirrss of Gnesen (Gniezno) and two from Bernhard Filehne of Posen (Poznań)). The photograph from Gnesen has an unsigned inscription, "Für meine liebe Schwester Marie," suggesting that Mary Myers may have been an immigrant from the Posen region. The photograph album has a printed decorative title page with the title The American photograph album and an endleaf printed with the title Index to portraits, here left blank. Two hinged metal clasps are on the fore edge. The 24 frames in the album could hold a maximum of 48 photographs placed back to back. In the center of the album, three of the photograph frames, only one holding a photograph, and half of a fourth are detached, leaving the front and back halves of the album detached from each other though still attached to the binding.
