Summary

Records of property and its valuation in the seventh municipal district of New Orleans, compiled by tax collector Victor Gerodias (1833-1917). The account book is printed for the purpose with double-page openings divided into columns with the printed headings Names of Taxable Persons, Names of Streets, Nos. Lots, Measurement, Value of Real Estate, No. Slaves, Value of Slaves, Income Over $1,000, Furniture Over $500, Value of Horses, Value of Carriages Etc., Stocks in Vessels and Corporations, Capital in Business and Money at Interest, and Remarks. The entries are arranged by square, in numerical order with gaps in the sequence, here from Square No. 3 (f. 2v) through Square No. 135 (f. 58v). For each square, landowners are entered in ink with measurements of their property, followed by renters entered in pencil. The Remarks column is most frequently used for type of business (for example, dry goods, coffee house, cigar store, clothing store, book store, printing office, blacksmith, peddler) or notes about adjustments or decisions by the Board of Assessors and another authority, perhaps a Board of Supervisors. Members of New Orleans' Jewish community listed include merchants Meyer Godchaux and Leon Godchaux (f. 5v) and Charles Levy, physician (f. 12v). Approximately 20 free women of color and 5 free men of color (abbreviated f.w.c. and f.m.c.) are listed among both landowners and renters. The book is bound in cloth with one title in gilt on a leather label on the front board (Tax assessment, 1863, 7th District, V. Gerodias, No. 1) and a brief version printed in ink on the spine (Asst. Coll., 7th Dist., No. 1, 1863).
