Summary

Secular (as opposed to monastic) antiphonary for liturgical use in Lyon, containing the chants of the Divine Office for major feasts and Sundays. Possibly copied for use in the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Lyon, as the Feast of Saint John the Baptist is the only sanctoral feast distinguished with a large puzzle initial (f. 111v). The other sanctoral feasts included are for Agnes, Agatha, Philip and James, John and Paul, Peter, Paul, Lawrence, the Assumption of the Virgin, Michael, Cecilia, and Andrew. The last gathering of the manuscript (f. 172-176), containing 9 chants for Psalm 94 and antiphons, may be a later addition, as its layout diverges from that of the rest of the manuscript. Some 15th- and 16th-century marginal annotations and corrections.

Layout

Written in up to 12 staves per leaf, with a line of text below each staff, except for the last gathering (f. 172-176), which is written in 2 columns of 13 staves (f. 172r-173r) and 14 staves with no side margins (f. 173v-176v); ruled in lead; some prickings visible.

Decoration

9 large puzzle initials in red and blue with red and blue filigree penwork extending in the margins (f. 29v, 33v, 40v, 87v, 104r, 107v, 111v, 123v, 145r); smaller initials in red with blue filigree or blue with red filigree throughout; staves and rubrics in red; later addition of a small drawing in ink in place of a missing initial I (f. 144v).

Script

Written in a Gothic script.

• Formerly owned by Georges Gendreau, curator of the Bibliothèque de la ville de Fontainebleau, who acquired it when it was being sold as bookbinder's waste.
