Summary

Collection of copies of late 18th-century editions of the mathematical, arithmetical, and geometrical works of the Danish mathematician Christian Cramer, followed by a copy of a 1648 edition of a Danish translation of the Illuminierbuch by Valentin Boltz, illustrated with pen-and-wash drawings of flowers and plans of garden elements, such as flowerbeds or lawns and paving or tiling. After the binding of the manuscript in 1794, the compiler added a note about the binding of the book and autobiographical notes beginning with his birth in 1767 on the front flyleaves, continuing to add significant events through 1825 (f. i verso-ii verso). In 1806 he added more notes, possibly a poem, to the end of the manuscript (f. 632r).

Contemporary Danish calf over wooden boards, one strap and one catch left from the original pair; spine label Christian Cramers regne-bog, Christen Jensen; paid for by Jensen in 1794 (inscription, f. i verso).

Layout

Text written in 21-29 long lines; some pages of problem sets are written in 2 columns (for example, f. 208r-214v); frame-ruled in ink with double bounding lines; horizontals ruled in lead for some section titles.

Decoration

6 title pages with pen-and-wash floral borders and titles in colored inks (f. 1r, 80r, 151r, 388r, 437r, 507r, 575r); numerous additional pen-and-wash botanical drawings in last work (f. 576r-591r, rectos only); numerous garden plans in ink, some with watercolor washes, in last work (f. 592r-631r); drawing in ink of garden equipment (f. 626r); mathematical diagrams, some on foldouts (f. 150r, 573r) and some with colored washes (for example, f. 505r, 516v-525v, 542r-549v, 571r-574v).

Written in cursive script, with calligraphic section headings, by Christen Jensen.
