Summary
A slim ruled volume with a plaid green and gold paper cover comprising copied poems and elegies with Christian themes. Written on the first page of the volume is "Eliza Maria Dalton a rememberancer [sic] of old friends, October 19th 1844." Many of the poems in the volume are undated. The first seven pages have the initials E. H. at the bottom of each poem and include "A district visitor's recollections" and "The heliotrope" dated September 1842. The ten pages following are poems by Martha Pearce Rouch noted by her initials. Titles include: "The harvest," "Hours of waking," and "The sister's dream." Two poems at the end of the volume are attributed to Lucy E. and M. A. E. The last poem in the volume is dated 1854. There are four leaves laid in the volume. One is an undated poem entitled "Lines suggested by an old man's engraving for a infant." The second is an elegy, "To the memory of Mr. John Willis," dated January 1848, initialed M. R. On the third and fourth leaves is an American civil war song "Somebody's darling," copied from the People's magazine, 1869. The last item is a copied portion of a letter from Mrs. Herbert to Dear Mary, Sunday, November 11, 1866 discussing Mr. Herbert's sermon and the death of John Herbert Bradley (1847-1866) son of Reverend Charles Bradley (1789-1871).
