Summary

Book of hours on parchment with incomplete miniatures, written and illuminated in France, possibly Paris, circa 1500. Four miniatures are present; in the Hours of the Cross, after an initial illumination of the Crucifixion (f. 80r), five spaces for miniatures have been used for outline drawings of the traditional iconography cycle for the Hours of the Cross, which were already present in the early 19th century, as mentioned in the sale description of 1819; ten additional spaces for miniatures were not used. Suffrages include Saint Fiacre and Saint Clodoaldus (Saint Cloud). The Hours of the Virgin, Hours of the Cross, and Brief Hours of the Spirit are followed by the less common Hours of the Conception of the Virgin, but no Office of the Dead.

Early 19th-century Dutch morocco, gilt-tooled with fillets, dentelle, and centerpieces on covers; gilt spine in 6 compartments with spine title Latyns geschreven getyde boe[k]; marbled paper endpapers; two ribbon bookmarks.

Layout

Written in 14 long lines, with sections in 17 long lines (calendar, quires 1-2), and 16 long lines (f. 29r-32v, 37r-55r, the outer four bifolia of quire 5; f. 64r-79r, quires 9-10); ruled in faint red ink with double upper horizontal bounding lines.

Decoration

3 completed large arched miniatures above four lines of text with four-line initials, with full floral borders of flowers and acanthus leaves (Annunciation, f. 13r; King David at Prayer, f. 56r; Pentecost, f. 92r); 1 completed large miniature above four lines of text with a three-line initial, with a full floral border of flowers and acanthus leaves (Crucifixion, f. 80r); 5 drawings in lead with simple gilt or brown ink frames above three or four lines of text with three-line initials (Christ before Pilate, f. 81v; Christ Carrying the Cross, f. 83r; Christ Nailed to the Cross, f. 84v; Crucifixion, f. 86r; Deposition, f. 87v); 2 spaces left for additional large miniatures above four lines of text with four-line initials (f. 96r, at the beginning of the Suffrages; f. 108r, at the beginning of the Hours of the Conception of the Virgin); 8 spaces left for additional large miniatures above three lines of text with three-line initials (f. 89r, 91r, 97v, 99v, 101r, 102v, 104r, 108r); initials in gold on grounds of blue and pink patterned with white, one to four lines in height; line-fillers in blue and pink patterned in white with gold; rubrication in red; initials within the text touched with yellow.

Script

Written in Gothic textualis script of varying size (for example, f. 50v).
