Summary
Play in three acts about the conclave of cardinals selecting a successor to Pope Clement XIV, who died in 1774 (p. i-68). Text of play preceded by a sonnet on the death of Clement XIV (p. ii). Play followed by two short works: "Nell' iminente sopressione de Gesuiti. Sonetto" (p. 69-70); and "Scusa dell'Abbate Sertor, ritenuto in carcere, come creduto autore del dramma, Il conclave; al Sommo Pontefice Pio Sesto" (p. 71-78).
Notes
- Ms. codex.
- Title from title page (p. iii).
- Attribution from p. v: "La poesia e del celebre Sig. Ab.e. Metastasio in gran parte. La musica del Sig.e. Nicolò Piscini." However, this attribution to Metastasio does not seem entirely certain; it has also been attributed to Abbate Gaetano Sertor (p. 73-78). "Attributed by [Albert] Schatz to abbate Sertori [sic] ... [who] simply used the two names then most in vogue." The music does not appear ever to have been actually composed nor the work ever performed. (Sonneck, Cat. of opera librettos.).
- Incipit of prefatory sonnet (p. ii): Regnai nel tempo più tremendo é rio / le grand ire dei Rè vinsi, e placai / ...
- Incipit of the play (spoken by Negroni to Orsini; p. 1): Ho resoluto Orsini / Più consiglio non vo: se da me stesso / ...
- Incipit of second work (p. 69): Già trema per la febbre il Gesuito / gli commove la bile il Lusitano / ...
- Incipit of third work (p. 73): Padre Augusto dell Tebro, io più non credo / che di dolor si mora: un folle inganno / ...
