Summary
Text of 7 of Seneca's tragedies, with commentary by Nicholas Trivet, including: Hippolytus (imperfect at beginning, p. 1-14), Oedipus (p. 14-68), Troades (p. 68-132), Medea (p. 132-185), Agamemnon (p. 185-217), Octavia (p. 217-255), Hercules Oetaeus (imperfect at end, p. 255-309; continued for a few lines in a later hand, p. 310; headings continue, p. 311-316). Octavia was included in manuscripts of Seneca but is now thought to be by a later imitator.
Notes
- Ms. codex.
- Title from spine.
- There are captions in the top margin of each page; the one on each left-hand page gives Seneca's name, the one on each right-hand page gives the title of the play. These are in a much later hand than the text; they might be 17th century in date and might be in the same hand as the page numbers. Earlier headings, contemporary with the text but mostly trimmed away, are visible after p. 182.
- Contains a summary of contents, dated 1646 (p. vii). This summary states that the author of the commentary is anonymous. The attribution to English Dominican scholar Nicholas Trivet is taken from the Zacour-Hirsch Catalogue.
- Pages 287-88 and 309-316 are paper; the text on them is in a 17th-century hand. The first quire, consisting of 5 folios preceding p. 1, is also paper.
- Many of the leaves are missing portions at the edges due to tearing or to imperfections of the parchment. Only on p. 305-306 does part of the text seem to be missing. A large tear on p. 307-308 has been partially mended.
