Summary

Manuscript to be used for private or public consultation, recitation, and prayer; it contains sections taken from a larger text, most likely a compendium compiled from a variety of purāṇic and other sources and organized according to a related theme. Here the theme is festivals, observances (vratas), pūjās (rites of worshiping deities), and mythic origins of these rites. Part One is dedicated to Budha (Mercury), considered the son of the Moon, describing various rites to be performed in honor of this deity (such as bathing, fasting, offerings of milk, and others). Part Two, derived from the Matsyapurāṇa, is a fast observed in honor of the elephant-headed, Hindu deity Gaṇeśa on the 11th day of the 15-day cycle of the month of Baudha (August/Sept); presented as a dialogue between the Hindu deity Kṛṣṇa and the legendary prince Arjuna. Part Three deals with rites honoring cows, typically performed for the purpose of obtaining children and generally benefiting families. Part Four, derived from the Skandapurāṇa, relates to rites performed during the "birthday" celebrations of the deity Gaṇeśa.

The same scribe and paper were also used for Item 1453, Item 1454, Item 1455, Item 1456, and Item 1459, but are not clearly from the same manuscript.
