Summary

Dedicated to the praise and veneration of the Hindu deity Mallāri, a form of Śiva and his mythology, and sacred places of the Deccan region; the god's cult is especially popular in the state of Maharashtra, particularly among low caste people; refers to purification through bathing rites at pilgrimage sites. Text references a deity who is a hybrid of the Sun and Śiva named Mārttaṇḍa Bhairava. Work is purported to be a part of the Kṣetrakāṇḍa of the Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa, no standard editions of that text include it; thought to have been composed by Deśastha Brahmans of Maharashtra; colophon is in Sanskrit and Marathi.

Provenance

• Manscript was written in the town of Jejūrī (f. 145v), in the district of Pune, Maharashtra state, likely at the temple dedicated to the deity Mārttaṇḍa Bhairava there, named at the end of the text.
