Summary
Notes of José Maria Sánchez on the Zapotec language, covering verb tenses (f. 1r-2r) and common phrases (f. 9r), in Spanish and Zapotec, supplemented with the following material by C. Hermann Berendt: Spanish-Zapotec vocabulary (f. 3-8, 10-26); notes on the grammar (f. 18v, 23v, 25v) and alphabet (f. 27r) of Zapotec; and a bibliography of over 30 works on the Zapotec language (Literatura de la lengua Zapoteca; f. 29-31), with notes on the locations of extant copies of listed works. With the exception of a brief list of words with an attribution that is not completely legible (beginning: Dr. Ignacio), dated 1871 (f. 3r), and a few entries from the Diccionario universal de historia y de geografía (f. 3r), the vocabulary provided by Berendt is extracted from the anonymous manuscript Quaderno de ydioma zapoteco del Valle, written in San Martin Tilcajete (Tilcaxete), in 1793 (f. 4r). For Berendt's transcription of the complete vocabulary from the latter manuscript, see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 216. Also included are brief excerpts from a manuscript by E. A. Fuertes (a stanza of a song by Queen Anacaona, in Zapotec and English, and Fuerte's remarks on the legends about her), along with comments by Berendt (f. 2v); for Berendt's transcription of the quoted work by Fuertes, see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 107. Included as well is a 3-line stanza described as a song in Zapotec of Tehuantepec (f. 3r), with the Spanish equivalent; no source is given. A folder shelved with the manuscript contains the following items that were laid in: several different partial versions of, or notes pertaining to the bibliography on Zapotec in Spanish (5 leaves, plus a hand-sewn 4-leaf gathering), including a table of contents of the listed 116-leaf manuscript by Pedro de Feria (see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 102, for Berendt's transcription of excerpts from that work); an annotated bibiography on Zapotec in English (The literature of the Zapotec language; 1 leaf), with a narrative introduction and notes about where extant copies of works are to be found; 2 versions of a longer narrative about the Zapotec language in German (2 leaves); and miscellaneous notes in Spanish (2 leaves).
