Summary

Comparative vocabulary compiled by C. Hermann Berendt, with approximately 750 words, 42 numbers (ranging from 1 to 8,000), and 81 phrases in Spanish, and the equivalents, when available, in the Chiapanec (Chapaneco) language of Chiapas, Mexico; the Chorotega or Mangue language of Nicaragua; and the Maribia (or: Maribio) language, represented by the language spoken in the village of Subtiaba (also spelled Subtiava; in the city of León), Nicaragua. The table includes four different sets of Mangue vocabulary, corresponding to the language as spoken in the localities of Masaya; Masatepe/San Marcos; Niquinhomo (Niquinomo)/Rosario; and Namotivá/La Paz (Santa Catarina and San Juan); and two sets of Subtiaba vocabulary. (Perhaps a majority of the Chiapanec equivalents are provided but the other columns are, on the average, less than half filled.) According to the details noted on the first two-page spread (f. 1v-2r), the source of the first set of Subtiaba vocabulary is Tomasa Munoz de Amaya, Subtiaba 18 February 1874; that of the second is the Rev. Doroteo Amaya, pastor of Subtiaba, born there in 1835. Written to the side in the latter column are some words of Subtiaba given by E. G. Squier in his book Nicaragua, its people, scenery, monuments, and the proposed interoceanic canal (1852; v. 2, p. 320-323); where Squier referred to the language as Nagrandan. Under the heading for Chiapanec, Berendt indicates himself as the primary source of the vocabulary, with some entries marked as specific to Chiapas (Ch) and others as specific to Suchiapa (S), and some undesignated. Occasionally equivalents are noted as drawn from the Chiapanec grammar of Juan de Albornoz (A), and from two other texts in the language that Berendt designates as Doctrina (D) and Pasión (P), presumably corresponding to his own transcriptions, entitled Doctrina christiana en lengua chapaneca, and Pasion en lengua chapaneca (see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 117 and Item 120, respectively). In the column for the Mangue of Masaya, Berendt indicates himself as the main source, but also gives, to the side, in the same column, equivalents as reported in the above work by E. G. Squier (v. 2, p. 320-323), where the language is called Chorotegan or Dirian. Included in the manuscript is a clipping of an article headed Zur Ethnologie von Nicaragua, based on a communication from Berendt, published in Correspondenz-Blatt der deutschen Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte (No. 9, September 1874, p. 70-72; tipped in, inside front cover). The article indicates that Berendt concluded from his comparison that the Mangue language was closely related to Chiapanec; and that Maribio (as evidenced in Subtiaba) was not related to Mangue.
