Summary
Copy in an unknown hand of a collection of 18 texts of Catholic prayers or statements of doctrine translated into the Kekchi language, presumably copied from an older original. Among the contents are the Lord's prayer; Ave Maria; Apostle's Creed; Ten commandments; Commandments of the Church; Articles of faith; Works of mercy; General confession; and Act of Contrition. Several sections appear to be model exchanges between priest and congregant (Las preguntas; Declaracion de los sacramentos). The first 10 texts are numbered in sequence. The last two entries are longer texts, perhaps sermons, having to do with matrimony and baptism, respectively (Parlamento para casamiento, f. 31-35; Parlamento para el bautismo en lengua, f. 36-40). The last leaf seems to be signed twice at the end with the name that appears to read: Marulino Chun, dated Coban, November 23, 1864 (f. 40r). Perhaps related to the latter name, the initials M. Ch. appear on the title page, as well as the name resembling Chun, signed in a similar manner. Tipped in on the inside upper cover is an extensive note about the manuscript, signed A. C. Breton and dated May 1918, evidently written by Adela C. Breton. In her remarks, Breton brings the present manuscript into relationship with two copies of Kekchi doctrine made by C. Hermann Berendt at Cobán in 1875, Ms. Coll. 700, Item 76 and Item 188. Breton states that the present manuscript appears to be copied from the same original as Item 76 while showing certain additions and omissions. At the same time she remarks that in spelling it does not always follow the others, and that it appears to have been copied from dictation, with the expected proportion of errors. She notes that it includes two texts, Parlamento para casamiento and Parlamento para el bautismo, that are not found in the other copies. The first two leaves of the manuscript are torn and partially wanting in the upper right, with some loss of text, and have old repairs with tape on the verso.
