Summary
Carbon copy of a manuscript by, and in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt, entitled Drei Tage auf der Insel Cuba (Three days on the island of Cuba). The manuscript carries the subtitle and dedication: Reise Fragment für meine Tochter Helene (travel fragment for my daughter Helene; f. ii). Relating the story in the past tense, Berendt tells of a trip that he took, evidently in early 1860, from his residence in Veracruz, Mexico, to Havana, Cuba; he travelled aboard the Spanish mail steamer Union via the ports of Celestún and Sisal (both in Yucatán, Mexico). On the title page (f. i), written just below the date 1860, are notes by Berendt that seem to indicate his having sent the manuscript in four parts to an unidentified addressee, as follows: 6 February, p. 1-22; 1 March, p. 23-38; 8 March, p. 39-46; 1 April, p. 47 to end. The narrative itself does not appear to specify the dates of the trip; however, there are two references to events in the past dated 1858 and 1859: at the point when the ship reaches Sisal, Berendt tells about a visit that he made to that city earlier, in the year 1858 (f. 12); and in experiences recounted to him by a doctor he meets, there is a mention of an outbreak of yellow fever in 1859 (f. 13). Sites in or near Havana that are mentioned include Paseo del Tacon; Cerro; Jesus del Monte; Alameda de Paula; Regla; and Guanabacoa. Among the people whom Berendt meets in Havana are the naturalist Juan Gundlach (1810-1896) (f. 44-45); and Simon de Cardenas and his family (f. 45, 48 f.). Berendt makes references to the African slave trade (f. 56-57, 62-63) and the trade in Chinese laborers (f. 61-63). The text contains occasional emendations to the carbon copy (p. 14, 19, 30). The volume has a table of contents at the back (f. 69).
