Summary

Notebook containing C. Hermann Berendt's draft bibliography on the Maya language, encompassing works dating from 1565 (f. 18v) to 1865 (f. 6r). Included are notes about content, publication, and locations of manuscripts, as well as biographical details about authors. Berendt also refers to personal experiences and communications with fellow researchers (f. 12r, 13v, 14r, 19r, 21v). Authors for whom there are longer notes include: Gabriel de San Buenaventura (f. 4v); Diego de Rivas (f. 8r); Alonso Solana (f. 9r); Bernardino de Valledolid (f. 10r); Luis de Villalpando (f. 11v); Alexander Henderson (f. 13v); John Kingdon (f. 14r); Albert Gallatin (f. 15v.); Adriano Balbi (f. 17r); Mr. Tromback (f. 19r); Juan Pío Pérez (f. 17v, 19v, 21r); and Juan Villanueva (f. 21v). Berendt includes a brief autobiographical entry (f. 4r). A pencilled timeline, from 1848 to 1870 (inside upper cover), appears to record places where he resided. In two separate folders shelved with the manuscript are a total of 44 loose items that were laid in it or accompanied it, including 7 items of correspondence, dated 1868 to 1872; and 39 items of notes, dated circa 1864 to 1871. The correspondents are G. J. Adler; Joh. Carl Ed. Buschmann; George Gibbs; Simon Sarlat; and the American Bible Society (secretary Joseph Holdeck). The item from the latter society is a response to an inquiry by James R. Bartlett about a manuscript dictionary of the Maya language. The item from Gibbs, addressed to Berendt, concerns efforts to locate a translation of a Maya grammar by John Kingdon. Correspondence to Berendt from Adler and Buschmann are responses to Berendt's inquiries about a work of Wilhelm von Humboldt on the Maya language. The item from Sarlat, signed by him on the last page, is in the form of notes entitled Contestacion a los informes que me pide, mainly relating to Joaquin Ruz, Juan Pío Pérez, and Crescencio Carrillo y Ancona. Of the loose items of notes, one is a small hand-sewn booklet entitled Maya litterature, in Berendt's hand, written on pages from a daily calendar, containing references related mainly to Joaquin Ruz, Pedro Beltrán de Santa Rosa, and Juan Pío Pérez. Among the remaining loose items are a diagram of localities and distances in the vicinity of Mérida; an obituary clipping about the Franciscan priest Manuel Antonio Peralta (Mérida, 1870); and a chart with about 35 author names, apparently related to the compilation of the bibliography.
