Summary

Miscellaneous drafts and loose notes in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt related to the Maya language and the Indians of Mexico, which were stored in a cardboard folder with a label on the front, in Berendt's hand, reading: Literatura de la lengua maya (the front cover is included). Among the papers is a manuscript copy entitled: Titulo de tierras del pueblo de Chacxulubchen (hoy Chicxulub), traduccion verbal por D. Man Encarnación Avila (a booklet of 12 leaves), made by Berendt in Mérida, dated 1868 (containing a reference dated 1871). The work is apparently a chronicle of the town of Chicxulub in the Mexican state of Yucatán. (Another copy by Berendt of the same work is contained in Ms. Coll. 700, Item 43.) Also included is draft material (about six leaves) relating to Berendt's preface (Advertencia) to his copy of the 17th-century Spanish-Mayan dictionary known as Diccionario maya-español del Convento de San Francisco in Mérida, which Berendt copied from an existing copy made by Juan Pío Pérez (for Berendt's copy of the dictionary, with a finished version of the preface, see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 3). The draft is in two parts, one highlighting the copy of Pérez and the other, that of José María Meneses. The first two pages of Maya-Spanish entries are included. A related leaf has the heading: Noticias sobre el diccionario maya del cura Meneses. Another distinct gathering of a few leaves contains notes in German under the heading: Notizen über die indianische Charakter des östlichen Theiles Mexicos bis zum Isthmus von Tehuantepec. Finally, of the loose notes, the major portion (9 leaves) pertain to the work of Juan Pío Pérez, including draft versions of material concerning Pérez's copy of the Diccionario espanol-maya de Ticul; those drafts are related to Berendt's preface to the copy he made based on Pérez's copy (see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 2). One of the remaining loose notes is a rough outline of a bibliography on Mayan languages, referring to works dating from the 16th to the 19th century (for fuller drafts of the same bibliography, see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 234 and Item 235).
