Summary

Miscellaneous notes (approximately 55 leaves) in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt, related to vocabulary, grammar, orthography and phonetics of the Kekchi language, especially with reference to Cobán, Guatemala. The notes were together in a paper folder with a title page reading: Apuntes sobre la lengua kekchi, Cobán, 1875. Included are three sets of notes with attributions: 1) notes on orthography, as well as vocabulary with Spanish equivalents (heading: Lengua Cechi), as given by Domingo Coy, native of Cobán, dated March 1875 (7 leaves); 2) notes on verbs (Verbos - Quekchi), attributed to Pedros Torres, dated 26 August 1875 (1 leaf); and 3) a word list of under 50 entries (Quecchi de Coban) attributed to Schumacher, 1874 (1 leaf). Other notes with specific headings include a list of 123 entries pertaining to family names and place names in Cobán (Apellidos de los indigenas de Coban y de los pueblos de idioma kekchi); separate leaves of vocabulary lists with Spanish equivalents including plant names, geographic names, the names of illnesses; and a few notes on grammar topics (nouns, verbs, prepositions). Two leaves, possibly in a hand other than Berendt's, have headings in German referring to the occurrence of double consonants. The remaining notes include lists of words and phrases with Spanish equivalents (about 7 pages). Some notes are written on the versos of three small fliers advertising Brown & Polson's corn flour products prepared from maize - Indian corn.
