Summary
Miscellaneous papers (approximately 28 leaves) concerning the Mangue language of Nicaragua (also called Chorotegan or Dirian), mostly in the hand of C. Hermann Berendt, that were together in a paper folder with a title page (undated). The material mainly comprises separate sets of notes on Mangue vocabulary, usually with Spanish equivalent, and often with the name of the person who was the source, and perhaps a few biographical details; in some cases Berendt supplies a formal title statement. The following groupings can be distinguished (of not more than three leaves each): 1) Apuntamientos de la lengua mangue - frases y dialogos, by Juan Eligio de la Rocha, Masaya, collected in 1842 (copy in Berendt's hand), around 60 entries (for a more formal copy of the same material, see Ms. Coll. 700 Item 140). 2) Vocablos y frases del idioma mangue, collected by Daniel Ortega, of Diria, 1874, from a 63-year-old Indian by the name of Tuleno [?] Sevilla, of the town of La Paz, evidently in the hand of Ortega, containing 41 entries. 3) About 30 entries, with a comparison to a few words in Maribio, or Subtiaba language, dated 22 December 1874, from Luis Sevilla, born in 1811 in San Juan and living in La Paz since 1859 (possibly the same individual consulted by Ortega, above?). The latter item includes a page of notes in German that appear to be by Berendt, describing his inquiries in the villages about the survival of the language, which he found was known only in connection with older people, except in Monimbo, a suburb of Masaya, where he found someone who knew it a little bit. 4) A few entries under the names of three different individuals, two of them located in Monimbo. 5) About 30 entries attributed to Tia Fermina and, in one instance, Fio Gaitan. 7) A few entries attributed to Tia Simona Jimenez, of Rosario. 8) Three names of people in Niquinhomo, with one or two phrases below each. Among the remaining notes, one gives a comparison between Mangue and Sioux by Hyde Clarke, as copied from a manuscript of E.G. Squier; Berendt adds comparisons to Subtiaba and states that the latter is the language in question, not Mangue. Another note lists vocabulary of Mixtec, with Spanish equivalent, taken from Pimentel, with a heading querying the relationship between Mixtec and Mangue. Another set of notes comprises bibliographical references concerning Chiapanec. Also included are a prospectus for the journal Zeitschrift für Ethnologie; and two broadsides in Spanish. One of the latter is entitled La voluntad de un pueblo, dated Nandasmo, 14 March 1874, over the name of municipal secretary Ramon Navarro; the other has the heading Acta, and is dated from Masaya, 16 March 1874. Both apparently concern the candidacy of Pedro Joaquin Chamorro in the presidential election, ending with lists of names of endorsers or sponsors; various pencil marks highlight a few of the names.
