Correspondence predominantly in English, with some Spanish, and one letter in French; original material in a variety of Indian languages, usually with English and sometimes with Spanish translations. Of the material in Indian languages, more significant amounts are in Tarascan, Inuit (Eskimo), Maya, Hopi, and Pawnee; and lesser amounts are in Kiowa, Omaha, Blackfoot (Siksika), Klamath, Quapaw, Shawnee, Shoshoni, Ponca, Navajo, Chippewa, and Iroquois

Summary

Texts of songs in languages of Indians of North America, the Arctic region and Mexico, often with notes and/or translations, and sometimes music, collected by Daniel G. Brinton from various collaborators, for a projected volume in his series Library of Aboriginal American Literature, advertised in the 1880s under the title Aboriginal American anthology; the title given here is: American anthology. (The book was never published.) Included is a draft table of contents showing 16 sections; and the material is organized accordingly, with numbered divider pages written on the versos of copies of a publisher's flier for the series. Section 1 contains notes for the introduction; section 2, miscellaneous correspondence; and sections 3 to 16, correspondence and contributions from 13 collaborators on different Indian groups, as follows: 3. A. J. Standing: Kiowa; 4. Alice C. Fletcher: Sioux (specifically: Omaha); 5. James Willard Schultz: Blackfoot (Siksika); 6. Jeremiah Sullivan, M.D.: Hopitu (Hopi); 7. José F. Ferrer (of Yucatán): Maya; 8. Albert S. Gatschet: Klamath; 9. Frank Finney: Quapaw and Shawnee; 10. Walter James Hoffman: Shoshonee (Shoshoni); 11. James Owen Dorsey: Ponca; 12. Washington Matthews: Navajo; 13. Hinrich Rink: Eskimo (Inuit); 14. John Dunbar: Pawnee; 16. Nicolás León: Tarasca (Tarasco). (In an apparent oversight, Rinks is listed twice, under both 13 and 15.) Miscellaneous correspondence includes letters from F. Atkisson, A. N. Chamberlin, J. A. Cuoq,, Myron Eels, Willis E. Everette, Charles Godfrey Leland, and José Mas Macedo (of Lima, Peru); and another small group of letters, from Edward Ashley, Andrew J. Blackbird, Franz Boas, and Wilberforce Eames, was nearby, evidently not yet categorized (for simplicity, the communications of the latter 4 correspondents have been integrated in miscellaneous correspondence). The letter from Blackbird contains a song of the Ottawa Chippewa (Ojibwa) Indians; that from Boas contains two Eskimo songs; and that from Cuoq contains a refrain from an Iroquois lamentation. The correspondence from Sullivan includes an 8-page glossary of Hopi words; that from Rink contains texts of tales in addition to songs; that from León (in Spanish) probably pertains to matters beyond the song anthology, and includes an 8-page transcription with interlinear Spanish translation of a document entitled Testamento de Don Fernando Fitu (or: Titu) Huitsimengari (later published in Anales del Museo Michoacano). Music is included from Schultz, Finney, Hoffman, Matthews, and León, as well as Boas and Cuoq. Four sheets with music (from Finney, Hoffman, Matthews, and León) are stored separately in an oversize folder in a map drawer.
