Summary

Notes of C. S. Rafinesque on antiquities and ancient place names, mainly of North and South America, with many drawings and hand-drawn maps. The notes were possibly once bound in notebooks or scrapbooks. Title pages or caption titles indicate two distinct projects, under the titles: 1) Ancient monuments of North and South America, with some notices on the most ancient monuments of Asia, Europe, Africa and Polynesia (92 leaves); with part 1 dated 1822-1825, and part 2, 1821-1825 (the date 1827 is cited, f. 22v). 2) Ancient geography of America: ancient names of countries, lakes, rivers, town, etc., begun in Philadelphia in 1834 (24 leaves). At some point in the past, modern foliation was added in pencil, and the notes underwent conservation treatment. The arrangement in the current processing was guided by the modern foliation; to what extent the foliation records an original or intended order cannot be easily discerned. The notes currently are in the form of three booklets (as reconstituted during treatment), Parts 1 and 2 of Ancient monuments, and one booklet for Ancient geography, and loose material (in varying formats) amounting to about half of the material. The notes for Ancient monuments comprise a compendium of entries of varying length (a few lines to several pages), under geographical headings, evidently not in any particular order; perhaps half of the headings are American state names (Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, Tennessee, Ohio), with material on Kentucky listed by county (f. 29r-31v, 50v-51v); place names from elsewhere are regularly interspersed (Peru, Mexico, Spain, India). Entries tend to be listings, with notes in telegraphic style; some published sources are cited (Humboldt, f. 16; Clinton's memoir, f. 34; J. Hayward, f. 40). Many small drawings are interspersed. The loose material on monuments includes a set of drawings, plans and maps that appear to have belonged to a small notebook (f. 56-71), pertaining to Kentucky and a few other states, with many of the captions in French; and other maps or diagrams, and a few notes (f. 72-92). The notes on Ancient geography comprise glossary-style entries of ancient names correlated to modern ones, pertaining to North and South America, and Mexico (f. 1-9, 12; f. 10-11 are on ancient monuments, not names); and loose maps (f. 13-24), mostly pertaining to the United States, with one of South Africa (f. 19). A section on Lenape names is attributed to Heckenwelder (f. 7v-8r). Together in a separate box (Box 2) are 5 oversize leaves, as follows: Ancient monuments, f. 55, 78-79, 91-92; and Ancient geography, f. 20-21, 23.
