Summary
Part of a late 17th- or early 18th-century gradual containing chants for the Mass particular to the Mercedarians. Includes propers for the Mass for the Solemnitas Descensionis B.V. Mariae de Mercede (Feast of Our Lady of Mercy), the feast of the patron of the order, and the feast of Saint Raymond Nonnatus, a Mercedarian priest canonized in 1657. One musical passage is a simple example of polyphony, with parts for contralto, tenor, and bass (p. 12). The gradual contains a heading and a couple of notes referring to the Missa Indiana (p. 8, 15, 17), suggesting that these Latin chants were used by the priest in conjunction with vernacular singing by an indigenous congregation, but no indigenous texts are written in the manuscript. Pagination and marginal notes show signs of trimming for rebinding, and the Te Deum at the end (p. 38) is incomplete.
