Summary

Single leaf from an Atlantic Bible produced in Northeastern France of Flanders in the mid-12th century. The text is from Paralipomenon (aka 1 Chronicles) 16.42 and 19.17. The tradition of producing immense "Atlantic Bibles" arose in Italy at the end of the eleventh century and spread very quickly throughout Europe. Many fragments survive from Italian Giant Bibles, but those from France are less common. This leaf was used as a book cover and therefore slightly abraded, discoloured, trimmed to the edge of the outer columns, and teh outer corners cut.

Layout

  • Single leaf, front and back. Double column, 42 lines. A good amount of soiling and some stains. It looks like it was once used as a book cover and because of this one side is trimmed just up to endof the column. Corners are cut out. At the top of each side there is a word in red. One says lis(?) and the other lasati(?).
