Acknowledgment addressed to Flavius Apion, or his heirs, of the loan by Aurelius Ptollion of one solidus for a Carian instrument.

Notes

All margins but the top seem intact. There is evidence of several vertical folds, perhaps from being crushed as a roll.

Layout

Main text (Side 1): 24 lines with the fibers. 17 lines in one hand plus 7 in another hand (with lighter ink).

Side 2: one line, written along the fibers perpendicular to the writing on the other side, and extending the full depth of the piece.

Lines 18-24 in a second hand. The line on the opposite side is in a hand more similar to the second hand than the first, and perhaps indicated the contents and/or the addressee.

Provenance

Excavated by Grenfell and Hunt (1896-7) on behalf of the Egyptian Exploration Fund, and donated to the University Museum in return for its support (1901, Dr. Parrish Collection).
