Summary

This manuscript is a fragment of a fifteenth-century French Gradual.

Notes

• The two preserved calendar leaves contain the obituaries of Margaret, Duchess of Burgundy (January 23, 1423), and Isabella, wife of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (December 16, 1471), suggests the manuscript was executed in Burgundy sometime after 1471 (Wolf); decorative initials bear a strong similarity to those in a Gradual currently housed at the Pierpont Morgan Library (Ms M.115) from the Carthusian monastery of the Holy Trinity at Champmol and may be by the same hand

No prickings visible; four-line staves ruled in red; eight staves per page; dark crayon ruling; forty-nine large penwork inhabited initials (full stave +); fifteen alternating blue and red large pen-flourished initials (full stave +); small alternating blue and red pen-flourished initials throughout, extend less than one stave; written area: 240 x 140 mm

Various initials on every page, including large black penwork initials heightened in green, yellow, and pink; initials decorated with foliage and ribbon designs; and initials inhabited with animals, grotesques, and human caricatures; large and small pen-flourished initials, alternating blue and red
