Summary

This manuscript is a twelfth-century Spanish monastic copy of Augustine's Enarrationes in Psalmos (Psalms 119-133), a commentary on the Psalms for preachers, followed by Augustine's Enchiridion, a treatise on Christian piety. The Enchiridion is prefaced by the paragraph from Augustine's Retractio about the treatise. The manuscript was held by the Abbey of Santa María de Benevívere in northern Spain, which was founded in 1169 and followed the Augustine Rule. The text is written in Protogothic script with rubrication in red and approximately fifteen large initials in combinations of red, yellow, and blue. Corrections and additions are written in the margins throughout. A bifolium bound in at the end presents variations of ornamental initials in black ink, A-F and L-N, with four to six variations of each letter. On the second verso of the bifolium, fifteenth-century reader Brother Hugo has copied the hymn Veni, Sancte Spiritus, and a version of the collect following the Salve Regina that appears in Spanish missals, signing his name at the end (Ugo Frey).
