Summary
This Books of Hours for the Use of Rome was produced in Bruges in the late fifteenth century. It contains a calendar, in French, of the Use of Utrecht (fols. 1r-12v), followed by the Prayer to the Face of Christ (fols. 13r-14r), the Hours of the Cross (fols. 15r-21v), the Hours of the Holy Spirit followed by the Gospel Lessons (fols. 23r-33v), the Hours of the Virgin (fols. 34r-84r), Obsecro te and O intemerata prayers (fols. 84v-90v), Penitential Psalms, Litany, and Prayers (fols. 92r-108v), Office of the Dead (fols. 110r-135v), and a final section composed of the Athanasian Creed, Veni creator, and other prayers to a Guardian Angel followed by Suffrages, the Seven Verses of Saint Bernard, and a final Suffrage to Saint Christopher (fols. 136r-152v). Four major textual sections are preceded by full-page miniatures attributed to the Master of Edward IV (active c. 1470-1490), each of which has a blank recto side: these represent the Pentecost (fol. 22v), the Annunciation (fol. 33v), King David in Prayer (fol. 91v), and the Three Living and the Three Dead (fol. 109v). The miniatures and the incipit pages of these sections, as well as the incipit pages on fols. 13r and 15r, are surrounded by full-page strewn-flower panel borders with gold wash backgrounds. The borders of the page opening for the Office of the Dead (fols. 109v-110r) are composed of dark grey backgrounds with skulls. A single small inset miniature illustrates the Suffrage to Saint John the Baptist (fol. 141v). This suffrage page, as well as the post-Matins divisions within the Hours of the Virgin, have matching strewn-flower border of the single-panel type. The book was in the Guyon de Sardière and La Vallière collections in the eighteenth century.
