Summary
This dogale consists of a commission issued by Doge Leonardo Loredan (r. 1501-1521) to Marc Antonio Contarini (1485-1546), captain of a fleet proceeding to Flanders. The text opens with a lavish all'antica style frontispiece in the style of Benedetto Bordon that includes the Contarini arms (first and fourth or, three bendlets azure) in the right margin, and an oval cartouche in the lower margin depicting the Virgin and Child blessing Contarini in the presence of Saints James and Helena. The script has been attributed to the noted scribe Giovanni Antonio Tagliente. The body of the text is in Latin; folios 40r-58r are in the Venetian dialect of Italian. The volume appears to be housed in its original binding.
Notes
- Granted by Leonardo Lauredano, Doge of Venice, 1501-21, to Marcantonio Contarini, captain of a fleet proceeding to Flanders
- Harrsen noted that: "James Wardrop of Victoria and Albert Museum, in 1957, attributes manuscript to Tagliente, about whom Mr. Wardrop has written"; this scribe is assumed to be the Venetian calligrapher Giovanni Antonio Tagliente
- By an Order of the Council of 2 May 1504, the latest date quoted in this manuscript, backers were found to enable the Venetian galleys to sail for Flanders; it must have been shortly after this that the commission was written out appointing Contarini captain of the fleet (from Wolf, 1937, p. 158)
