Summary
This large manuscript is a Gospel lectionary, a compilation of the Gospel readings for the mass throughout the year and for special occasions. The readings for the Temporale (Advent through the Sundays after Pentecost) are followed by the readings for the Sanctorale, including the feasts of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Benedict, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and Saint Lambert, patron saint of Liège. At the end of the volume are the Gospel readings for masses for particular purposes, such as for the dedication of a church, for peace, for the sick, or for the dead, and an alphabetical index of incipits with folio numbers. The manuscript was commissioned, circa 1525, by Jean de Falloize of Liège. It is written on parchment in two columns of textualis quadrata and illustrated with six large illuminations with full borders and sixteen single-column miniatures. A bifolium with the coats of arms of Jean de Falloize and the Krickenbeek family of Coninxheim (fols. 1v-2r) was added to the front of the volume later in the sixteenth century, when a descendant of those families entered the Cistercian convent of Kuringen at Herkenrode.
