Summary
This paper manuscript contains Niccolò de Tudeschi's commentary on the fifth book of the Decretals of Gregory IX, which deals with the Inquisition. The Lodi watermark suggests a date in the 1450s. Early ownership notes record that the book was bought in 1458 by Theodorico de Buckinstorff, who graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1439 as a doctor of both canon and civil law, and then by Johem Speiss of Rotenburg in 1477. The text has minimal embellishment, with initials and paragraph marks in red. However, the codex retains its original fifteenth-century binding which comprises brown pigskin scored with a lattice pattern over oak boards. There are fragmentary remains of clasps. A contemporary title is written on the bottom edge, and again on a parchment pastedown on the front cover.
Notes
- Contemporary inscription in ink on the bottom edge: "Nicolaus de sicilia super quinto"
- Inscription inside front cover: "Lectura Nicolas de Cecilia monachi super quinto decretalium", the same as that on the titulus on the front cover
