Summary
This volume contains Peter Lombard's Liber IV sententiarum (Four Books of Sentences) in two neat columns of text. It is embellished with large decorated initials at important divisions in the text, such as the start of the prologue and of each individual book (fols. 1r, 3r, 63r, 65r, 116v, and 156v). Its wide margins have been filled with copious notes and annotations in a number of contemporary and later hands, in both ink and drypoint. Also in drypoint are a series of remarkable marginal drawings. Their subjects appear to be entirely unrelated to the text, and include people (fols. 100r and 111r), ships (fols. 65v, 66r, and 98r), animals (fols. 76v and 111r), birds (77r), fish (98r), a number of crowned figures (fols. 102v and 159r), geometric sketches (fols. 100r and 165v), and a mermaid (103r). The parchment itself bears evidence of historic damage and repairs (fol. 17, for example, has been cut through entirely and only partially patched up). The earliest known owner of this volume is Pope Clement XI (1649-1721), who is identified by a dedication written in gold on white silk (flyleaf 3).
Notes
- Early repairs to parchment throughout
- Some leaves cut or otherwise damaged
- Loose fragment of parchment between fols. 81 and 82
- Marginal note listing the nine orders of angels on fol. 73r
- The marginal drawings in drypoint are not visible in the digital images
