Summary
This manuscript consists of a collection of various prayers to be read in conjunction with portions of the Mass, but it follows no known common set of prayers. The manuscript contains four full-page miniatures that introduce each section of prayers. These depict, respectively, the owner (a Benedictine monk with an unidentified coat-of-arms) in prayer before an altar (fol. 2v), a monstrance adored by two musical angels (fol. 26v), the Virgin and Child in glory (fol. 112v), and the Trinity (fol. 122v). The book is dated precisely to 22 September 1538 on folio 146v, and can be localized to Saint Amand, near Valenciennes. Later additions at the beginning and end of the manuscript are dated 1576 and contain the name of a later owner, Charles Fontaine, but the identity of the original owner depicted in the miniature on fol. 2v remains unknown. The later additions as-yet contain unidentified mottoes and coats-of-arms. The rubrics of several prayers indicate that indulgences would be granted upon reading. The manuscript is closely related in script, date, and localization to Lewis E 109.
Notes
- Areas of paint in the miniatures and border decoration are in poor condition, especially on first and last folios; sewing structures compromised between some gatherings
