Summary

This late fifteenth century manuscript, likely produced in Florence, contains the text of Thomas de Waleys's commentary on Saint Augustine's De civitate dei (City of God). Waleys was a Dominican, likely from Wales, who was educated at Oxford and Paris and was active in the first half of the fourteenth century.

One large initial on the first page in gold and colors of a Florentine type in the manner of Antonio de Chierico, with foliate decoration and extensions containing gold dots, a coat-of-arms in the lower margin supported by two putti with the partially erased monogram IG in the center of the arms; twenty-two smaller initials in gold on grounds of red, green and blue; capitals and paragraph marks in red and blue; rubrication, headings, and underlining in red

• Bought in Florence, Aug. 8, 1486, by a Franciscan monk, Frater Salvator Orlandini de Lanciolina, according to ownership inscription on fol. 122r ("Iste liber expositionis super librum Augustini De civitate dei est as usum fratris Salvatoris Orlandini de Lanciolina ordinis minoribus quem emit Florentie optimo partio anno 1486 die 8 augusti"); R. Dugate (?) circa 1880; Bull and Auvache, London (print catalog clipping on lower pastedown); sold to John Frederick Lewis, Philadelphia; given by his widow, Anne Baker Lewis, to the Free Library of Philadelphia in 1936
