Summary
This liturgical manuscript contains the Common of Saints (fols. 1r-65r), the Office of the Dead (fols. 65v-84r), an Antiphon for the Vigil of the Nativity (fol. 84v), and a Credo beginning "Patrem omnipotem" (fols. 85r-86v). It is thought to have been made, along with Free Library MSS Lewis E 221-234, for the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Portugal around the middle of the sixteenth century. This manuscript is missing a number of leaves and is suffering in places from significant flaking in the text. The texts themselves are lavishly illustrated with a number of black and colored initials with pen-work decoration. On fol. 65v, at the beginning of the Office of the Dead, is a large illuminated initial with a skull at the foot of a crucifix and a partial flower-strewn panel border. This manuscript was re-bound in the eighteenth century, and retains many of the metal fittings and one of the clasps added at that date. The front cover has, however, become completely detached from the rest of the book. Pasted inside the front cover is a paper folio from a seventeenth-century(?) liturgical manuscript with musical notation.
