Summary

This manuscript is a copy of the Gospels written in Caroline Minuscule in Germany, possibly Metz, circa 1020. The prefatory material for the Gospel of Matthew is probably missing; the other Gospels have prefaces and synopses, but the first leaf of the Gospel text in each is missing and has been supplied later, perhaps in the fifteenth century. The lower margins have been cut from some leaves (fols. 60, 120, 143, 176, 182), in one case with loss of text (fol. 53). Cross-references between Gospels, contemporary with the text, are marked in the side margins. A capitulary listing the incipits for the Gospel readings throughout the year follows the Gospel of John (fols. 189v-197v) but only runs through the end of August.

One column of twenty-two lines; frame-ruled in hard point with double bounding lines; prickings visible; each verse begins with an initial written in the left double bounding line; written area: 195x 128 mm

Decoration

Red initials throughout; a second stage of nine-line puzzle initials at the beginning of each Gospel (fols. 1r, 53v, 89r, 147r) in red and blue ink and running titles and chapter numbers in textualis script in red ink added later, possibly in the fifteenth century
