Summary

This manuscript is a 13th-century copy from France of Raymond of Penafort's (c. 1175 - 1275) Summa de casibus poenitentia (Treatise on the Cases of Penance). Raymond was a member of the Dominican Order, and an authority on the subject of canon law. His Summa de casibus poenitentia (Treatise on the Cases of Penance), a manual of canon law for confessors, was intended for use in determining the type and amount of penance a person should receive for a specific crime or sinful act. The gloss was composed by William of Rennes, a contemporary of Raymond. His gloss often accompanies the text of the Summa de casibus poenitentia.

Notes

• On the back inside flyleaf are descriptive notes on the manuscript, indicating that Thomas M. Izbicki identified it as Raymond of Peñafort's Summa de Poentitentia in a letter of July 8, 1980
   
• Fol. 31 has been cut and repaired. Two leaves from Book I are loose at the beginning of the manuscript. Some discoloration to leaves, with a number of final leaves in the manuscript curling at the corners.

Binding

Modern vellum over board with leather thongs; inscription in the inner front cover identifies it as French from the thirteenth century; written in ink on spine: "TREATISE ON CANON LAW."

Layout

Two loose leaves from the MS slipped in before flyleaf; written area: 175 x 118 mm; 2 columns of 40 lines, lead point ruling; the primary text is in a slightly larger script and always runs in the left column with the gloss to the right; the opening pages to each book have been excised, leaving relatively little decoration: flourished initials in red and blue begin rubricated chapter openings and books are designated in red and blue roman initials in the upper margins; the original foliation is visible in the upper left verso corners, beginning from fol. i with each book; lightly annotated throughout.

Decoration

Occasional blue and red initials; red underlining and blue and red paragraph markings throughout; math equations in pencil appear in the margins of ff. 52v and 116 v.
