• Initial C with the Temptation of Adam and Eve
   
• This initial begins Psalm 97, 'Cantate domino canticum novum' (Sing to the Lord a new song), which praises God for his mercy and for the salvation of the world. Psalm 97, the beginning of one of the ten major divisions of the Psalms, is typically illustrated with a scene of a choir of monks. Here, however, the illuminator has chosen to emphasize the reason why the world needed to be saved. According to Christian belief, Adam and Eve committed the 'original sin' by consuming the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. For this, they were expelled from Paradise, leaving their descendents to find the way back through the mercy of the Lord praised in Psalm 97.
